West Allegheny Athletic Training
Hello from the Athletic Training Staff at West Allegheny
We wanted to take a moment and tell you a little about the athletic training program at West Allegheny.
What is an athletic trainer (AT)? We are health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with our education and training and the state's statutes, rules, and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by ATs include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
Our Program and Athletic Trainers
WASD has 2 athletic trainers on staff contracted through UPMC. We work under the direct supervision of Dr. Russ Adams (team physician) and Dr. Bryson Lesniak (UPMC supervising physician). The athletic training room is in the high school’s athletic wing. We are typically present at least 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the start of the 1st practice/game and leave after the last event of the night. For specific times, please reach out to us.
Amy Robinson, MS, LAT, ATC
I received a bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine from Marietta College (1998) and a master’s degree in athletic training from Marshall University (2000). I previously worked as an athletic trainer for the WV Special Olympics, the PFX Pro Fast Pitch Tour, the Pittsburgh Marathon, HealthSouth (Parkersburg, WV) and First Settlement Physical Therapy (Marietta, OH). I have worked with middle school and high school athletes mainly but have also worked with semi-professional, professional, Olympic and Special Olympic athletes.
“I have special interests in concussion and mental health. I have been with UPMC Sports Medicine since 2010 and West Allegheny since 2015. I am a Supervisor for the Athletic Training & Development Department, supervising 8 athletic trainers at 5 different high schools. My overall goal is for all our West A student-athletes to be healthy athletes who go on to be healthy adults.”

I have completed continuing education courses in baseball specific injuries and rehabilitations, movement screening and corrective exercise, the impact of breathing on posture and injury, and professional development courses.” Pete has recently been promoted to a Supervisor within the Athletic Training & Development department, overseeing 2 colleges and 9 staff members.
What do I do if there is an injury?
Unfortunately, injuries can occur, and we are here to help guide you and your athlete through the injury process. When present at the time of injury we will evaluate the injury and help navigate the next steps in care with you, the athlete, and coaches. If we are not present, we ask that you or the coach contact us to set up a time to be seen in the athletic training room. We will work with you to help you get seen by the most appropriate medical provider of your choice in the timeliest fashion if determined appropriate. If your athlete is working with the athletic training staff, we ask that they report to their treatment times.
We do have the ability to fast-track athletes within the UPMC Sports Medicine system including concussion, but you do always have a choice of provider. If you see a physician or specialist outside of UPMC we will work with you to communicate important information to your provider and work with them to get your child back as quickly and safely as possible.
We can provide rehabilitation here at the school, but sometimes injuries require more in depth, 1 on 1 time with a physical therapist and options can be discussed when suitable.
We also work closely with the school nurses to provide continuity of care for the student athlete.
Any changes in how they feel or if they have been seen by a medical professional since their last visit should be disclosed to athletic training staff as soon as possible.
ALL clearances must be reviewed by athletic training staff before athlete returns to sport.
ANY time your athlete seeks care from a medical professional they MUST bring back documentation from that professional with diagnosis, treatment plan and return to sport/activity status. Not getting the appropriate paperwork at the time of visit may delay the athlete getting back to sport. Please ask if you are unsure what paperwork is needed for your athlete.
Concussion Specific Protocol at West Allegheny
Any athlete who exhibits concussion signs or symptoms during participation with an athletic team will be removed from the remainder of the event and not permitted to return until an evaluation has been performed by the appropriate medical provider (AMP). If an athletic trainer is present at the event, they will assess the athlete and determine if a referred to the appropriate provider. If no athletic trainer is present, the coach is responsible for holding the athlete out for the day, contacting parent/guardian and athletic trainer.
If an athlete is suspected of having a concussion, the parent/guardian will be notified by the athletic trainer, team physician, school nurse, or head coach. The athlete should only be released under direct supervision of a parent/guardian unless arrangements are made with the medical staff or head coach. Parents should always be given the option of emergency transportation. Athletes and parents/guardians should receive a Home Care of Head Injury Sheet from the AT staff.
Return to Play after a Concussion
The following must be met BEFORE an athlete may return to play from a suspected concussion:
- Full examination by proper medical professional
*No post-injury ImPACT testing will be completed at the school; athletes seen outside of the UPMC
network will be provided their ImPACT passport ID number.
- Exertional progression under the direction of the treating AMP and overseen by AT staff
- Exit Test or Sport Exit Test
- WRITTEN clearance with diagnosis from the treating physician or concussion specialist. This note can be turned into the school nurse or athletic trainer. (per PIAA rules, must be signed by MD or DO)
- ALL clearances must be reviewed by AT staff PRIOR to athlete returning to sport
- Emergency room notes will not be accepted for clearance
